Omar Akram & his music

Omar Akbar was Born in Kabul Afghanistan and started studying music at the age of 15 learning the Tabla from Ustad Asef in Kabul. He graduated from Naderia (Omar-e-Shahid) high school and in 1983 due to the political crisis in Afghanistan, he moved to India. His passion and desire for music grew even stronger being in the heartland of music which motivated him to attend one of India's most well known music schools, Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi to learn music professionaly. He started learning light classical music (Ghazals) from ustad Shanti Hiranand for four years & then moving on to learning classical music from Ustad Akhtar Nawaz And Anita Roy for almost two years.



During these memorable years, Omar also became close friends with fellow musicians Ustad Khalil Ghudaz, one of Afghanistan's top Sitar players and Ustad Ulfat Aahang. Additionally, he met many other well-known Indian Artists over there inlcuding Ustad Besmellah khan, Ustad Zaker Hossain , Ustad Amjad Ali khan, and Kishori Amonkar from whom Omar had the privlage of taking some lessons. In 1988 Omar signed a contract with All India Radio and recorded several songs with the station. While these were some of the most memorable and sweet years in Omar's life, he once again had to take a big new step in his life and came to United States in 1992. He stayed in New York for the first few years of his life in the US and then moved to California where he currently resides with this family.


His hard work day and night with music in addition to normal life's activities allowed him to become a successful artist. Omar has always strived to be unique in his own way by studying different cultures closely and learning as much as he can from music styles created and played all around the globe. His dream and focus is to take advantage of every second of this life and leave a postive and constructive memory in the heart of everyone he comes across through his music and singing.
